Autumn in Perea & Thessaloniki: Sea, Wine, Markets and Culture

The sun setting over the sea and the pier in Perea, seen from the terrace

Autumn is one of the best times to experience Perea and Thessaloniki.

The summer crowds thin out, the city’s cultural season starts properly, wineries and spas become more tempting — and on a sunny October or November afternoon, you can still sit barefoot in the sand in Perea with lunch by the sea.

Still barefoot by the sea

Autumn does not mean abandoning the beach. Perea’s long sandy beach is lined with seafood tavernas and cafés looking across the Thermaikos Gulf — and they do not disappear when summer ends.

On a bright October — and sometimes November — afternoon, one of our favourite things is simply to walk downstairs, find a table by the sea and let the afternoon stretch out over fish, wine and coffee.

You may not always want to swim, but you can still take your shoes off, feel the sand under your feet and enjoy the kind of Mediterranean sun that makes autumn feel very far away.

Wine country without the summer rush

Harvest season and cooler afternoons make autumn a particularly good time to explore the wineries around Thessaloniki. Start with Ktima Gerovassiliou in Epanomi, make an evening of wine and food at Domaine Florian, or discover modern retsina at Kechris.

A spa afternoon

November or a rainy day is the perfect excuse. Hyatt Regency’s ANAGE Spa is about 13 minutes away, September City Wellness is an easy urban afternoon, and Afrodita Roa makes the spa itself the destination.

Three generations of Thessaloniki food markets

Thessaloniki’s food culture is best understood through its markets — and autumn, when walking the city is a pleasure again, is the time to do it.

Kapani · old Thessaloniki

The old-school version: narrow lanes, fish, meat, spices, olives, household goods and the feeling of everyday Thessaloniki rather than a polished food hall. The official city guide describes it as one of the most traditional markets and one of the best places to experience the city’s local rhythm.

Agora Modiano · reborn in 2026

The historic central market reopened in September 2026 with 32 shops under its old roof: greengrocer, butcher, fishmonger, bakery, grocery, eateries, tsipouro bars, a confectioner, a coffee roaster, a wine shop and a bar (Agora Modiano).

October belongs to the Dimitria

Every autumn, the Dimitria — Thessaloniki’s oldest cultural festival, now in its 61st edition — brings theatre, music, opera, dance, visual arts and literature to venues across the city. In 2026 it runs from 1 to 26 October, under the theme “Currents”, ending around the feast of the city’s patron saint, Agios Dimitrios, on 26 October (Dimitria).

Our tip: check the programme for your dates as soon as you book — the bigger performances sell out.

Also in October: Thessaloniki Beer Festival

From 8 to 11 October 2026, Pavilion 16 at the TIF-Helexpo fairground turns into a beer hall with an Oktoberfest feel: Greek and international beers, live music and street food — a relaxed, sociable counterpoint to the Dimitria’s theatre and concerts (official event page).

November belongs to cinema

The 67th Thessaloniki International Film Festival runs from 5 to 15 November 2026. It is one of the strongest reasons to visit in November, with screenings, guests and events across the city — and the waterfront cinemas around the old port at the heart of it.

An evening at the theatre or concert hall

Autumn is when the city’s theatre, music and performing-arts calendar comes properly alive. Dress up, go into the city for the evening and come back to the quiet of the sea.

Walk the city properly

From the White Tower along the waterfront, past the sculptures and cafés to the Concert Hall: autumn is arguably better for this than August, because you can walk for hours in comfort.

Take a day trip into history

Ancient Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great, is about an hour’s drive away — and the city’s own tourism blog recommends it as an autumn getaway. Mild days and quiet sites make November an especially good time to go.

Our ideal autumn day

  • Slow breakfast on the terrace.
  • A walk or coffee along the Perea waterfront.
  • Into Thessaloniki for Kapani and Modiano, followed by a long lunch.
  • A festival screening, concert or theatre performance in the evening.
  • Then back to Perea, where the sea is waiting quietly outside.
