Perea or Thessaloniki: Where Should You Stay?

Perea’s beachfront tavernas at blue hour, with the lights of Thessaloniki across the bay

Perea and Thessaloniki sit on the same bay — on a clear evening you can see the city’s lights from Perea’s waterfront. Both make a good base, but for very different trips.

Thessaloniki is a lively, walkable city full of history, museums and late nights. Perea is a seaside town on the edge of it: beach, waterfront tavernas and sunsets, with the city and the airport close by. The right choice depends less on which place is “better” and more on what kind of days you want.

Stay in Perea if you want…

  • The beach outside your door. In Perea the sea is part of every day, not a trip you have to plan — and better beaches are a short drive away.
  • Waterfront restaurants. Fish tavernas, cafés and bars line the seafront — see our favourite restaurants in Perea.
  • Sunsets over the Thermaikos Gulf. Perea faces west across the bay, which is exactly why the evenings here are so good.
  • Easier parking. Arriving by car is far simpler than in the dense city centre.
  • Quick airport access. Thessaloniki Airport is just down the road — ideal for early flights and late arrivals.
  • A quieter base. Lively along the promenade in summer, calm once you are home.
  • Easy drives to Epanomi and Halkidiki. Beaches, vineyards and the peninsulas are in the opposite direction from the city traffic.
  • To visit Thessaloniki rather than sleep in it. Spend the day in the city, come back to the sea for the evening.

Stay in Thessaloniki if you want…

  • Nightlife. Bars and music venues that stay busy long after midnight, all within walking distance.
  • Museums and historic sights. Byzantine churches, Roman ruins, the White Tower and the Archaeological Museum on your doorstep.
  • A dense city atmosphere. Markets, squares and constant activity.
  • To walk everywhere. In the centre you rarely need a car.
  • More shopping and late-evening restaurant choice. The city simply has more of everything, open later.

How far is Perea from Thessaloniki?

Perea is on the eastern side of the Thermaikos Gulf, close to the airport, with Thessaloniki’s centre across the bay.

  • By car or taxi: about 30 minutes to the city centre, depending on traffic.
  • By boat (summer): a seasonal boat connects Perea with Thessaloniki in roughly 50 minutes — a lovely way to arrive in the city.

Our tip: in summer, take the boat into the city and a taxi back after dinner. You get the view of Thessaloniki from the water, and a short ride home to the sea.

Is Perea a good base for Thessaloniki?

Yes — especially if you want to combine city and sea. Thessaloniki is close enough for a morning in the museums, lunch in the centre or a full day of sightseeing, and you come back to a beach, a quieter evening and a sunset over the water.

Spend the day in the city, come back to the sea for the evening.

It works particularly well for longer stays, for families, for anyone arriving with a car, and for trips that also include Epanomi or Halkidiki.

Where it works less well is a one- or two-night trip focused entirely on nightlife: if you plan to be out in the city until the early hours every night, staying in the centre saves you the journey.

What we would choose

For a short city break focused almost entirely on museums, nightlife and the historic centre, stay in Thessaloniki.

For a longer stay where you want sea, space and slower mornings while keeping the city within reach, Perea makes much more sense.

Why Sunset Terrace works so well as a base

Beachfront living, Thessaloniki within reach, and easy access to Epanomi and Halkidiki.

  • Beach and waterfront restaurants just downstairs
  • Around 15 minutes from the airport
  • A large private terrace facing the sunset
